sidewalk valentines

A few winters ago, on the walk to preschool from the bus stop, Stella and I brought along some chalk and colored some valentines. There are so many hearts set in concrete on a certain stretch of 26th Street here in the city, I think something like fifteen or more!

It rained later that day, and on the way back up to the bus stop after lunch there was just a faint pink tint left where we had colored our sidewalk valentines. I was glad I had snapped a few photos before they were washed away.

  1. These hearts are so sweet and lovely! What a fun and simple activity to do with your wee one. That first photo would make an excellent greeting card.

    1. Thank you! I wish I could find the rest of the photos, there were so many! It was really fun, and I'm impressed we left for school early enough to enjoy ourselves doing it!

  2. Great Idea! Loved it! Spreading the love one chalk heart at a time.

    1. Thanks, LT! There are all kinds of cool things in the concrete to color, we should go out again and see what else we can find.

  3. That's awesome! I wonder how many people passed by that day before it rained and said "aw, look, Somebody colored in all the hearts"?

    1. I don't know, but we were in a lot of people's driveways while they were trying to leave for work that morning that we had to scoot out of the way for!

  4. Great post! This could be a children's book concept!

    1. Thanks, Ann! A variation on that would be that the whole street, especially where people have drawn in the sidewalk concrete (we saw planets, eyes, and flowers along with all the hearts), could be a giant coloring book!
