history repeating

On Friday I went in for my first haircut in ten months. And we went for it. My friend Cindy cut the hell out of it. We went half the way first, about five inches, plus or minus, and I could feel the life draining from me. With the encouragement of other folks in the salon, we took it up another three inches, plus or minus.

I couldn't be more thrilled. This is a haircut I can work with. The curly bob for burlesque? I can't wait to try. Decent hair, HEALTHY hair, the minute I wake up? It's dreamy. I have never had a healthy head of hair. It took this much cutting to get it all smooth and shiny again, I think. I am a lady who likes to hide behind her hair, but it hasn't really ever worked the way I thought it did.

Then I remembered I've HAD this haircut before. I gave it to myself in India over twenty years ago (more on that soon), because it was TOO damn hot for my long, scraggly do.

 Ah, youth.

And THEN I remembered I really like to draw this hair. During a brief moment where I was fantasizing about leaving architecture school to go to FIT in NYC, I used to draw this haircut on a whole lot of stringy looking models with funny outfits.

It's just so crazy to think of how I have steadfastly clung to long hair, every day looking in the mirror and waiting it to grow just that little bit longer, enough to magically make me feel beautiful. I was joking with a friend the other day that a short haircut on a woman of my age can sometimes signify the slippery slope into middle age. I'm going to work this hair as hard as I can to make sure that doesn't happen. It may seem silly, but this haircut is going to be saving me a lot of hassles and headaches, and I'm really thrilled!

    1. Thanks, Ann. I have always, ALWAYS been a major crosshatcher. I really should find a way to use it for good, not evil.

  2. So not silly. I am getting my hair cut next week. I, too, hide behind long hair most of the time and then suddenly one day I will catch a glimpse of my reflection and think: "Who is that old hippie?!" and then realize it's ME! Then off to the salon for something freer, more fun, more manageable. Yours is beautiful! I love that it's your "dream hair" that comes out in your gorgeous drawings.

    1. Hi TangledLou! You know why I was really lucky? The stylist in the next chair over had a vision, and because I was friends with my stylist, she felt comfortable pushing me to cut more and more. She whipped out a book and was showing me all these shorter cuts that I didn't take seriously at first, but she was right. I'm always wanting someone to do that for me. I don't know hair and I don't know much about beautification in general, so that was really valuable to have a strong opinion there, and then my friend Cindy who just totally executed it perfectly.

In case you don't end up sitting next to someone crazy who is insisting you cut all your hair off, try to go in with a vision, or at least some photos. It helps so much!

  5. Since I have already slid down that slippery slope, but with pulled back, granny/hippie hair, I am thinking of cutting mine all off these days. I hope I look as cute as you do!

    1. Ya know, it always grows back, right? And if I grow mine back out, I'll be sure to actually get trims and have it grow in healthy, even if that takes a longer time. It's so nice to have soft hair, super healthy with no split ends. A lifetime first!
