los angeles workshops!

I am really excited to announce that I have THREE Valentine's Day themed workshops I will be teaching at French General in Los Angeles on February 6th and 7th. I cannot wait to finally visit Kaari, Robert and the gang and see all the beautiful wares there. I will probably spend all the money I make teaching there before I leave!

If you live in the area, I would love to see you! And, if you have friends in Los Angeles that you think would enjoy these great workshops, spread the word! It would be great to fill these classes to make the trip even more worthwhile.

Here are the links to register for each of the three workshops. Also, I will be teaching the rose de Granville class at Handcraft Studio School on February 1st. You can sign up for that class HERE.

fall workshops!

Hi there! Wow am I behind on things. I just hung and am already taking down a quick show of two new GIANT marigolds I created especially for Dia de Los Muertos this year. I'll share some more about that later this week. They are crazy big and awesome, but they took every moment of every day for the past two weeks and now my life is in shambles. I would love to return to some regular, normal-style writing here, but I just can't catch up right now. I haven't even shared Oliver's fun birthday party or some new recipes I've come up with that I think you would love. Maybe later this month.

In the meantime, I wanted to mention that if you are local, I am teaching my woodland egg ornament workshop three times this fall, and I'd love to have you join in. Here are the dates and the links to sign up. And I have several other new and beautiful workshops coming in December as well (find every single workshop HERE).

summer headpiece workshops

Isn't she gorgeous?! She really is, AND she worked very hard on that amazing headpiece! Love the way she draped the pompom trim.

I just finished up teaching my paper flower headpiece workshops for the summer at Makeshift Society in San Francisco and Handcraft Studio School in Emeryville, my usual haunts. Luckily for me, a lovely woman named Elda (who had taken my giant paper rose class back in May, see here fantastic rose photos here) showed up for class again with her camera. She took some very beautiful shots while we were working away at Handcraft Studio School. I love the way she captured the space and the mess we made there. This is a nose-to-the-grindstone class, but very much worth the effort and very fun.

Photo credit goes to Elda (pictured here) for all shots herein except for the godetia and rose still life, above.

I spent most of today writing up descriptions, gathering photos and booking all of my fall and winter workshops, so stay tuned for those registration notifications, coming soon. I even booked my first workshops in Los Angeles for early in the new year. Very exciting!

Now that my classes are over for the next month, and my giant dahlia headpiece order has been delivered, I'm sleeping. I thought you should know! I'm still as tired as can be, hopefully just working at such a deficit that it'll take a little more sleep to catch up. But I feel very normal, and that is great for all of us! I'm so glad for the time with the kids unfettered by exhaustion and nonstop paper cutting, but I'm itching to start new things, too. I'll be taking lots of notes during my down time, that's for sure. xoxo

july workshops with papel SF

Hi there. Quiet here, isn't it? I have every intention of writing and sharing here again, but I just can't find the time right now. Stella and I have been enjoying our vacation together immensely. We actually just returned from an hour of running together in the Panhandle. I can't believe it! I haven't moved my body in a long, long time. I really hope we keep at it.

In the meantime, I have been teaching myself some new flower techniques for my upcoming July paper flower workshops, including these amazing godetia. I could just wear these alone and be happy, but these workshops will also include marigolds, ranunculus, easy and awesome dahlias, roses, bougainvillea that I am very excited about, and simple carnations.

Please join me! You can sign up at the links below, with a north bay option and another dahlia class soon to be announced as well. I hope to see you there. Happy Monday! xoxo

may 2014 workshop schedule

Hi! I hope you had a great weekend. I am on the home stretch now and am finally able to see past the end of April. SO, I wanted to let you know about my upcoming paper flower workshops. In May I'll be back at Handcraft Studio School, Makeshift Society and Workshop, and I'd love to see you there. First, we'll be making giant, gorgeous, two-toned roses at Handcraft Studio School the day before Mother's Day. These would be lovely gifts for your mother, or even better, a great way to spend the afternoon making something with her. Then I'll be offering my paper dahlia headpiece class at all three locations. I have enough time to order specific paper colors to bring with me to the workshops, so if you are going to be attending a workshop and you have a specific color you are thinking of, let me know at sfcornerblog at hotmail dot com.

egg heart workshop

Clockwise from top left:
Beautiful sill; mini pompom trim for the hearts (find it here);
the fruits of our labor; six dozen blown out eggs

I held a class at beautiful Handcraft Studio School this past rainy weekend making my egg and crepe paper valentine hearts. I love teaching at Handcraft. The attendees are always truly wonderful women, and the owner Marie is a beautiful soul with a wonderful aesthetic. She's a great host and and all around super lady.

There was a nice turnout for the workshop even with several cancelations due to sickness. I am looking forward to the next class I've scheduled there for May (details to come so stay tuned). Marie has some other fantastic workshops coming up over the next several weeks, including Intro to Indigo with the lovely Kathryn Davey, Pine Needle Baskets with Judith Thomas, and Ombre Dye and Macrame Necklace Making with Cathy Callahan. That's the one I am definitely hoping to attend. I love everything Cathy Callahan makes, and I can't wait to be on the other side of the table at one of these things, learning something new.

More photos from the my class below. And then enough with the frigging egg hearts already, amiright? I do have to say, I love coming up with ideas for Carte Fini as their featured artist, because it forces me to think really, really hard to create new uses for the paper, and almost all of those projects have parlayed into great classes. Win-win.

Some really sweet women; the Valentine's Day mini pop-up shop in the studio, featuring goods
by Dutch Door Press and papel SF among others (open through Valentine's Day)

 A pink heart coming along well; all the colors

Just getting going; a real stitch and bitch

2.04.2014

egg + crepe paper valentine workshops!

Did you like my little egg valentines from last week? Well, I have a giant box of pink and red crepe paper and a bag of mini pompom fringe, and I'd love to hang out and make some with you! If you're in the area, I'm holding two workshops and I'd love to see you there. We can get our Valentine's Day crafting done in the nick of time. These replace the paper rose workshops I had previously scheduled.

Here is the class description, and the links to register are below.

"Using a giant array of Valentine's Day hues, learn to make beautiful heart-shaped valentines using blown out chicken eggs and gorgeous Italian crepe paper. Tiffanie will guide you through the process of assembling the hearts and finishing them with several different techniques and trims. You will complete at least one egg heart in class, and be provided with materials for another as well as a discount code for future crepe paper purchases. These little three-dimensional valentines are beautiful on their own, or strung up together on garlands. You can even fill them with mash notes, candies and confetti. They make perfect Valentine's Day gifts!"

Handcraft Studio School, Emeryville, CA
Sunday, February 9th 11:00-1:00 p.m.
Note: There will also be a Valentine's Day pop-up shop at this location, where I and others will be selling our best hand made Valentine's Day wares.

Makeshift Society, San Francisco, CA
Tuesday, February 11th, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Over the weekend the hearts were featured at Poppytalk and Studio DIY (thank you Jan and Kelly)! They are really cute and you should really come make some with me!

xoxo

february 2014 workshops

I'm excited to announce some workshops I have coming up in February. If you live in the Bay Area (or beyond) I'd love to see you there. Here's the scoop!

Learn to make oversized, realistic roses from gorgeous two-colored crepe paper from Germany. I'm holding this workshop twice, just in time for Valentine's Day, first at Handcraft Studio School in Emeryville, and then at Makeshift Society in San Francisco . Click the links below to register.

PAPER ROSES AT HANDCRAFT STUDIO SCHOOL
Sunday, February 9th, 2014
11-2:00 p.m.

PAPER ROSES AT MAKESHIFT SOCIETY
Tuesday, February 11th, 2014
6:30-8:30 p.m.

These roses are beautiful, and will surely make great gifts for Valentine's Day (Mother's Day, too)! I have taught this class for Martha Stewart before. It's really fun, and no glue guns required!

******************************

Also, back by popular demand is my woodland egg ornament class, renamed "Little Paper Acorns" by my pals at Handcraft Studio School. Cute. If you didn't catch the class in the fall, here it is again, but I'm going to bring in even more colors and options for either realistic and/or bright, fun little acorns. I'm thinking we should try them in coral and blue and all sorts of colors! The link to register is below.

LITTLE PAPER ACORNS AT HANDCRAFT STUDIO SCHOOL
Thursday, February 6th, 2014
7-9:00 p.m.

Then, watch this space in March and April, because I am working to develop a four-hour workshop on how to make a LARGE scale floral Easter Bonnet/Kentucky Derby headpiece based on the techniques I use to make my giant peonies and chrysanthemums. It's complicated, but you will be leaving that workshop with both the craziest headpiece you've ever seen AND the skills to make your own giant floral wall hanging. Hard to describe, but more soon! I might also bring back my Paper Flower Headpiece class, but that depends on what kind of time I have before the end of April. If not, for sure I'll run in it during the summer.

I'd love to see you at a workshop. I hope you can make it. Have a great weekend, everyone!

xoxo

round up: before winter

Clockwise from top left:
My mock-vintage bulb reflectors look great on a burlesque costume, too;
trimming;
ready for the show to start;
the mess that is our kitchen/my workspace.

Teaching in reindeer antlers;
a new take on the acorn cap;
some wonderful students at Handcraft Studio School;
final products.

Napping with Oliver;
Oliver has really dug into drawing;
a wonderful hike along the ridge of Tiburon;
Oliver helping me deliver more acorns to the shop.

 Street mirror;
two peonies ready to be shipped and me utterly demolished;
sangria and popcorn;
the antlers again.

 Hams;
frost;
Bare cupboards save for Ricola and astronaut ice cream;
morning walk shadows in the Panhandle (I miss this so much).

Oliver eating a gingerbread house;
his favorite friend;
mini-trees;
Stella finishes a 5K, with much walking, but she was very happy.

Coffees from Sunday night all-nighters, which I have just given up.

The kids had a big meltdown one night when we were away for Thanksgiving. Stella said she was so happy I had this new work, but she wanted things to be the way they used to be. Then Oliver got going, really sad and crying, asking for me to play with him more again. Then he started taking advantage of the situation while we were all huddled in a pool of tears, asking for me to never get mad at him for having a tantrum again. Nice try.

It was a touching scene and a major reality check for me. I had been staying up all night two nights a week for a couple of months. I was already wondering if I needed to go to some kind of rehab or something, because when we left for our trip I was so tired I slept ten hours in the car, then all night, then the next day I couldn't get un-groggy. Then the kids told me how they really felt and I realized that all-nighters are not the answer anymore to a big work load. That was fun for a while. But now I'm on a different schedule that has me getting work done and in bed by midnight most nights and that's working for all of us. I was a mess, though. Wow.

We have such a full weekend this weekend. Stella's winter concert tonight, a major all-night crab-fest party tomorrow night and then birthday parties and Oliver's preschool party fit in somewhere, too. I think next year we might do something crazy for Christmastime, like a "no-commitment" Christmas, where we don't go to any dinners, performances or parties. Probably not, but it sounds good right now!

Next week I'll be back with another donut pan project and a giveaway with it. Have a great weekend!

xoxo

holiday class schedule

Hi there! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. We took a lovely little 1,300 mile road trip to see family, proving again that we have the most incredible children in the world when it comes to patience and bladder control.

We returned home from our trip yesterday and I went right out and grabbed a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle. The Home and Garden section this weekend was themed "Handmade for the Holidays", and I was included in a full-page spread inside entitled "Holiday Classes: 8 Ways to Explore Your Crafty Side". What a thrill to see my name (and papel SF) in the Home and Garden section, along with a photo I had provided of my acorns, and to be in such great company (both friends and women I hope to meet were featured along side of me). I'm sure my mother is wondering why she paid for five years of architecture school at this point.

Here is the schedule for and links to my three December classes around the Bay Area, in case you didn't read the paper. I would love to have you join if you can. We will make some of my acorns and get started on some pine cones, have a beer or two, do some networking, and you'll walk away with a homemade holiday gift or two. This is a modern day stitch-and-bitch as far as I'm concerned, and you will definitely have some fun!

I am really excited about these classes, but I think this should be the last time I mention these freaking acorns here! Thank you for letting me be a broken record over the last few months with all of this jazz, it's been a fun little ride. I hope to see you in class! Happy Monday!

11.11.2013

on the air

Oh em gee, I did it! Did anyone catch my online class Friday morning on creativeLIVE? I lived through the experience and came out the other side a little more confident in parts of me, like the fact that I know what I'm doing and am pretty good at what I do, and a little sad about other parts of me, like the fact I am undeniably middle aged now. I am that person who has to face that I have a face inside a face now. Total bummer, and it took being on camera to see that, it's not apparent to me when I look in the mirror. Sad violin.

Setting up for the second segment.

I was feeling nothing but absolute horror right until I walked onstage Friday morning. Thursday night I told David I was "going solemn", which is something I do whenever we're driving to the Elbo Room for a burlesque performance or even before some of my real-life classes. I get really quiet and nothing can make me smile. It's just how I cope with extreme nervousness. With the help of the sweet and talented woman doing makeup, whose name eludes me right now, I was able to keep my head from exploding backstage before the broadcast. Also, getting there early enough to set everything up for the studio audience who were crafting along with me was key to my keeping it together.

The hosts, John Kennedy O'Connor and Jamarie Milkovic were amazing. They made me feel right at home and took great care of me on camera, as did the producers, and the four great women who were working on the project in the studio audience. So sweet and forgiving of any mistakes I made (like when I knocked the tree of my ornaments over in the first segment!).

JKO was a great sport and an excellent person to have by my side!

While I was working, I got a chance to talk a little about how I "avoid" finding inspiration, how I waited a long time for something to come to me that I really wanted to do, and I got to touch on the "craft vs. art" argument, which I would like to sort out in my own work and mind one day.

Jamarie and I having fun in the second segment with our matching dahlia headpieces.

If you would like to download the class (for a fee, but worth it) to use in the future, you can find that information here.

What fun I had once I got going. It's really the anticipation of anything that kills me. Once I jump in I always know how to swim, and I'm grateful for that. I'm sure if you ever speak publicly you can relate!

10.28.2013

head of the class

Just getting started!

Yesterday I taught my paper flower headpiece class at Handcraft Studio School (which is just the perfect place to teach or take such a class). It was a small group due to some cancellations, which ended up being very nice for me because we got to know each other a bit and I could be very hands on when needed. Which wasn't much at all. All of the ladies had a great handle on what they were doing, and incredible eyes for palette and composition.

Paper and pompoms for all.

I love this space!

Check out the gorgeous headpieces that each of these ladies made. Seriously amazing.

Some of the women traveled quite a distance to make it to the class, so thanks to you ladies, and to everyone who attended. It was a lot of fun!

Top three photos provided by Marie Muscardini of Handcraft Studio School. Thank you too, Marie!
