donut pan idea no. 62: seed bombs

Oh yeah, baby. I'm feeling ballistic today. No snarky comments over at Apartment Therapy are going to stop me from rolling out more donuts. Stella and I are ripping this set of donut pans a new one.

Here we go. DONUT-SHAPED SEED BOMBS. The seed bomb is as ubiquitous as the chalkboard wall (guilty!), but Stella thought this one up and it was fun, and it's done! We handed them out at a get-together this past weekend and used a few ourselves.

We followed this recipe, more or less. We used the art clay out of fear of over-baking the soil in the sterilization process and ending up with duds. By using the air-dry clay you can skip the oven and just use the sun. Of course it would've been fun to bake them, and possibly more in the spirit of the donut pans, but this was a fun way to get our hands (very) dirty.

Needed:
Five parts air-dry clay, one part native seeds, one part compost, water to loosen things.

If you don't have compost, maybe you can "borrow" a little from a neighbor or friend like we did.

Mix it all up, and loosen enough with a little bit of water to be able to work it a little better. Form into donuts in the pans, cleaning up the edges the best you can. We sprinkled the tops with more seeds just for fun.

We left ours in the sun to dry for a few days, then brought them inside, gently pried them out of the donut pans, and dried them upside down for a day on a cooling rack. They are designed to eventually come apart when wet, but it's nice to give them away dry.

I can't imagine how all the seeds in here won't strangle each other once they get going, but imagine finding a little ring of wildflowers. Like maybe in the park, or the Panhandle more specifically, where we left a few last week on the way to school. I hope they work!

  1. Oh! Sounds great! :D I love clay.. one time in church we had a children's workshop with loads of clay. Each child molded and played with the clay and a few took home quite elaborate pots...it was fun. (:

    1. Hi LT! We have so much clay left over from this project! I can't wait to dig back into it!

  2. Tiffanie - I have to tell you, I have been just loving all of the things you have come up with to use your donut pan for. These little seed bombs look like so much fun to make and use. I'm sorry that the folks over at AT were so strangely rude about the crayons. I thought they were absolutely delightful when you first posted them and I know that my kids would have a blast rolling them around to see what they did. Nor would they eat them. And if they did, they're crayons. What budding artist hasn't taken a bite out of a crayon at some point in their lives?

    1. Hi TangledLou! SO nice to hear from you! Thank you, I thought the whole thing was crazy ridiculous over there at AT. I kept checking back over the weekend and more and more comments appeared, some negative and some positive. I was just joking with the writer of the article that if crayons were that polarizing, what would've happened if they had featured these BOMBS instead? Yikes! Really great to hear from you! xoxo

  3. Man, the peeps over at AT must've had some major panty bunching going on 'cause they were grouchy. But they are somewhat notorious for bagging on kid-related posts.

Also: I love me some seed bombs and these are some of the best I've seen! I suppose you could break them into bits before bombing (and this shape would work better for that than the traditional billiard ball shaped bomb).

    1. Thanks, Rosa. I have also heard about the reputation of AT commenters, but in the seven or eight times I've had something featured there, this is the first time anyone's said anything negative. Not that I mind them disagreeing or not liking what I have done, but it was somewhat absurd with the crayons!

I am wondering if the flowers with the bombs are going to grow in a ring or circle. That would be kind of cool. Thank you for reading!

  4. It wouldn't be AT without snarky commentors Tiff :-) I've been reading AT for a long time and constructive comments or disagreement is cool but there is way too much bitchiness at times. Keep calm and donut on girlfriend.

Love the crayons and these (especially in the final pic) are intriguing. If you plant one, I'd love to see if you get your ring of wildflowers.

    1. Hi Tania. It's crazy over there! I've been on AT at least eight times in a year, and the crayons were the first time anyone gave too much trouble. It was pretty entertaining but also made me a little anxious!

We put a few in the Panhandle, which is super populated, so we'll see if they made it. We gave away the rest, and I will definitely follow up to see if anyone planted theirs to any success! :)
